Earthquake Intensity Scales

There are two primary methods of grading the intensity of an earthquake:

Richter magnitude scale - assigns earthquakes a number between 1 and 10 in order of increasing intensity

Mercalli intensity scale - assigns earthquakes a number between I to XII based upon the effects of the earthquake (after the fact)
