FAs the ice breaks up it flows down stream collecting everything and everything that it forces its way through. The insurmountable mass of the combination of ice blocks and debris packs a one, two punch destroying everything it comes in contact with.
 
There is nothing that you can do to protect from it except to avoid building, staying, storing, or crossing anything that in a low lying area which can be in contact with the Ice Jam.

AIce Jams threatened the bridges along the central and northern Deleware River in 2014. The National Weather Service had to issue warnings about bridge damage, flooding, and structural damage to low lying areas.
