When it comes to wearing insect repellents, the industry has it all backwards. Most of us, when protecting ourselves from insects will rush to a skin repellent. But the truth is, you can treat your clothing with a repellent first, only then having to protect the limited areas of exposed skin with a skin repellent, limiting your exposure to the harsh chemicals. Sawyer Permethrin, is engineered to be an odorless barrier of insect repellent that is proven as effective as 100% DEET. Sawyer Permethrin was developed from, and is the artificial analog of, naturally occurring pyrethrum from chrysanthemum flowers. Simply put, it is an odorless preventative repellent that also kills ticks and mosquitoes on contact and it remains proficient in all clothing up to six washings.
Apply it to Your Vehicle Too
I also highly recommend opening the windows in your vehicle, then spray Permethrin around the inside of the door openings, on the carpet and especially the seats. I have never experienced any issues with color setting but if you have a newer vehicle you might want to spray it on a less noticeable area first to make sure that it does not discolor the fabric.

Will's favorite brand is Sawyer. It comes in hand pump bottles, which I really like. I think that that the aerosol sprays are ineffective. I have found that the pump sprays yield 100% of the liquid for your use, the aerosol cans tend to fail on full delivery and there is no way if you have expended the propellant to use the remaining Permethrin.
Applying Permethrin
You must treat your gear and clothing prior to the day  If properly applied the protection even survives several laundering cycles (up to 6 or 42 days). It should never be applied to skin, it is intended to be used to treat clothing and gear ahead of time. You must allow it to thoroughly dry prior to wearing the treated item.

You apply Permethrin until the fabric is damp and then allow it to dry.
How Long Does Permethrin Last?
Bear and many other animals in the wild, for the most part, have no desire to make any contact or near contact with humans. Most cases of attacks on humans by wild animals are provoked by the people startling the animal, taunting it or having domesticated pets with them.
What is Permethrin?
(by Sawyer)
This is a PracticeSurvival.com Top Pick; Permethrin is the synthetic version of Chrysanthemums. Read our detailed article, follow the directions and you will have the best, most reliable tick, chigger, flea, and other insect pest repellent available. If you apply it properly one application will be effective for 6 washings or 42 days.
Long Lasting Virtually Safe to Humans and Pets
Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent has been proven in tests to be the only repellent that is nearly 99% effective at repelling ticks. Forethought and preparation are necessary for proper tick and parasite prevention.

Use Permethrin on clothing by itself or with skin applied repellents to create the ultimate protective, armor-like insect barrier. Permethrin-treatments on clothing are nontoxic to humans and are registered for use by the US EPA.
