Lenski's
Ground Breaking Postulates in Sociology

Lenski tracked history attempting to apply the theories of others that came before him. What he found was that while extinction certainly occurs, the process of sociocultural evolution is basically a cumulative process. He found that change and innovation are added far more rapidly to the system than older elements are eliminated.

Lenski realized that sociocultural systems have grown more complex over time because of that. Similar to the way that computer programs and operating systems become larger and larger, bloated and more complex as they evolve. Newcomers to the same arena often tout their lean more sleek products. Of course they are unburdened by the demands of the need to support the compatibility of the previous versions. It is actually a nearly perfect analogy for society; Evolution while supporting the older.
