Fire Starter - Ferrocium Rod
(Mitsch Metal)
Ferrocium Rod fire starter is a great, low cost and highly reliable tool in fire starting. A ferrocium rod is the alternative to flint (which is hard to find now a days). The ferro rod is often utilized in tandem with a soft (95% or higher) magnesium rod. If you have an alternative (to magnesium) fire starter material which takes alight easily with a spark, such as cotton with vaseline, char cloth or some other highly flammable target material
then the ferrocium rod is the ticket. If you buy a high quality fire steel (ferrocium) rod you will have a waterproof, reliable means to start tens of thousands of fires.

When you scrape rapidly the ferrocium rod with the sharp corner of a piece of high carbon steel the resulting scrapings spark and burn like a sparkler or the sparks flying from a piece of steel while you grind it on a grinder. The sparks containing minute amounts of ferrous oxide (iron) and magnesium light on fire. Magnesium's burning temperature is around 5080 degrees fahrenheit, they flame is blinding and will help aid your tinder bundle and target fire starting material to ignite.
