Charcoal is Extremely Useful Everyday & for Survival
Activated Charcoal is used in powdered encapsulated form in hospital emergency rooms everyday to treat poisoning cases. All charcoal, but activated is more aggressive, rapidly bonds with toxins and carries them out of your system. Whether applied as a poultice or internally it belongs in both your kit and in your knowledge base of how to info.
All charcoal is made by placing (preferrably small) bits of wood into a sealed vessel with very limited access to oxygen. The vessel having only a few small vent holes will not allow the wood to burn, instead it will char. As the wood chars, the unburned gases created in the process create wood gas (see the article on Wood Gas). After the vessel stops smoking, generally 4 hours for a decent sized batch.
Once the wood has "cooked" it is pure charcoal. Depending upon the intended use you can either break it into small pieces or grind it into powder.
